If an airplane seat reclines, is it fair to actually recline it?

On a daytime flight, I gently reclined my seat after takeoff. The person behind me said I was invading their space and asked me to keep it upright for the entire flight.

I raised it during meal service and offered to recline only halfway afterward. They still weren’t happy.

The seat is designed to recline, but the cabin is cramped. Where does comfort become inconsiderate?
